Why Is It Called Denny’s?
It was Danny’s first. Nobody called Danny or Denny founded it, and the name changed by a single letter because another Los Angeles diner complained.
So the most famous diner name in America is really a one letter fix. Change the a to an e, and the confusion with Coffee Dan’s goes away.
It started as a doughnut stand
Harold Butler and Richard Jezak opened Danny’s Donuts in 1953 on a small site in Lakewood, a fast growing Los Angeles suburb built for families working in the area’s aircraft and industrial plants. The first shop was tiny, around 900 square feet, and sold coffee and doughnuts.
Butler’s stated aim was simple and it became the company’s founding line: serve the best cup of coffee, make the best donuts, give the best service, offer the best value, and stay open 24 hours a day.
Jezak left the partnership in 1956, and Butler kept building. The shops added a grill and full meals, and the business was renamed Danny’s Coffee Shops, now open around the clock.
The Coffee Dan’s problem
By the late 1950s Danny’s had grown to around 20 restaurants in Southern California. That growth brought it into conflict with Coffee Dan’s, an older Los Angeles coffee shop chain that also stayed open late.
Two coffee shop chains in the same city, one called Danny’s and one called Coffee Dan’s, was too close. Coffee Dan’s objected, and rather than fight over it, Butler changed a single letter. In 1959 Danny’s Coffee Shops became Denny’s Coffee Shops.
In 1961 the coffee shop part was dropped and the chain became just Denny’s, the name it has used ever since.

What stayed from the Danny’s days
More than the name suggests. The 24 hour promise came from the very start, because Lakewood’s workers kept shift hours and needed somewhere to eat at any time. Coffee is still central to the menu, and bottomless coffee is part of the Denny’s identity.
What arrived much later was the dish most people now link to Denny’s. The Grand Slam breakfast was introduced in Atlanta in 1977, more than twenty years after the first doughnut was sold. Current Grand Slam prices are on the Denny’s menu.
Who owns Denny’s now?
Denny’s grew into a public company based in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with more than 1,400 restaurants. In January 2026 it was taken private by a group of investors that includes one of its own franchisees. The full story is in who owns Denny’s.
If you are comparing late night options, the other big 24 hour diner chain is Waffle House, and its prices are on the Waffle House menu.
